L’organisation du 49e Congrès eucharistique international (CEI 2008), est heureuse d’informer les médias et la population de Québec que Son Éminence le cardinal Jozef Tomko est le légat nommé par le Saint-Siège pour représenter Benoît XVI lors du CEI 2008. En regard à son illustre participation à la Rencontre internationale des délégués (RID) de mai 2007 à Québec, sa facilité à communiquer et l’engouement qu’il sait créer auprès des jeunes, les organisateurs du CEI 2008 se réjouissent grandement de cette nomination.
Le cardinal Tomko, originaire de Slovaquie, est préfet émérite de la Congrégation pour l’évangélisation des peuples et président émérite du Comité pontifical pour les Congrès eucharistiques internationaux. Il est titulaire d’un doctorat en Théologie, en Droit canon et en Sciences sociales et parle couramment plusieurs langues, dont le français. Il a été créé cardinal par le Pape Jean-Paul II lors du Consistoire du 25 mai 1985. Son parcours impressionnant et ses qualités d’orateur feront du cardinal Tomko un excellent rassembleur qui saura colorer l’ensemble des célébrations du congrès.

The organizers of the 49th International Eucharistic Congress (2008 IEC) are pleased to inform the media and Quebec City public at large that His Eminence Cardinal Jozef Tomko is the legate designated by the Holy See to represent Benedict XVI at the 2008 IEC. With his illustrious participation in the May 2007 International Meeting of Delegates (IMD) in Quebec City, his ability to communicate easily, and the enthusiasm he generates among youth, the 2008 IEC organizers are delighted with his nomination.
Born in Slovakia, Cardinal Tomko is Prefect emeritus of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and President emeritus of the Pontifical Committee for the International Eucharistic Congresses. He holds doctorates in theology, canon law, and social sciences and is fluent in a number of languages, including French. He was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II during the Consistory of May 25, 1985. His impressive track record and quality as a speaker will make Cardinal Tomko an excellent draw who will add inspiration to the Congress celebrations.
