A papal Legate will represent the Pope

Quebec, January 17, 2022 - His Eminence Marc Cardinal Ouellet wishes to inform the people of Québec that a final response has been received from the Holy See, to the effect that Pope Benedict XVI has decided to send a Papal Legate to represent him at the 2008 International Eucharistic Congress that is to take place 15-22 June, 2008. However, a televised link will enable the Holy Father to join in and play a part in the Congress.

Given this decision, the closing ceremony will be presided over by his Papal Legate. The population as a whole is invited to attend this great gathering on Sunday, June 22, 2008, on the Plains of Abraham. Thanks to the Papal Legate’s presence, this closing Mass will still have its symbolic import of being the visible communion of the universal Church gathered in Québec City around Jesus Christ present in the Eucharist.

This celebration will conclude the activities of the 2008 International Eucharistic Congress, which is the most important religious event of the festivities surrounding the 400th Anniversary of Québec City. The 15 000 pilgrims who will be attending this event will be living witnesses to the essential role the Catholic Church has played et is still playing in the lives of the people of Québec.
